Regular drinking wine in moderation after menopause helps to maintain bone strength, and abstinence from alcohol increases the risk of developing osteoporosis, a study by an international team of scientists. One or two glasses of wine a day can be just as effective as drugs for the prevention of bone thinning in older women.
This is the opinion of experts from the International Scientific Forum for the Study of Alcohol, which analyzed the study by scientists from the University of Oregon. It states that when women drank 19 g alcohol per day - about two small glasses of wine, the loss of old bone, improving the balance between old and new bone strength and reduces supported. But when women stopped to drink, bone balance is violated.
"Moderate amounts of alcohol may be beneficial for bones, but excessive drinking threatens to fracture and increases the risk of falls," warns Sarah Layland from the National Osteoporosis Society in Britain.
